[ Deirdra walks up the the front door of their house. She just came from doing some minor work for Eli. She promptly plops her things and herself on the couch, exhausted from a long day. By now, she expected to run into Aria or at least hear her doing something in the house. A quick scan of the house reveals that she isn't home.
She isn't bothered. They're all busy. They have a lot of things to deal with.
[The first thing Aria did after leaving Hikaru behind was take a walk in the Falner Forest. She had hoped that, by immersing herself in a place that hardly anyone else went to, by breathing in the early morning air and feeling the ground against her feet, she'd be able to clear her head.
It ended up being a long walk. Her thoughts were no less chaotic than they had been when she had stepped out of his door. Her feelings...
She did not want to begin to consider her feelings.
Still, she had things to do, people to talk to, problems to consider, preparations to make. As such, about two hours before sunrise, the door to the Heartnet-Duskrider house is creaking open. She's slipping in quietly, not bothering to announce her presence.
Maybe a part of her is hoping that nobody notices her coming in. She could get lucky, right?]
[ Deirdra hears someone open the door. She mentally accounts for everyone in the household, leaving Aria to be the only possible person to come home at this ungodly hour.
She doesn't necessarily rush to greet her as she is still on the couch, working on things on her laptop. Luck.
She closes the laptop as soon as Aria quietly steps in, looking at her with her chin on her hand, and with curious eyes. ]
[Maybe she should have covered her tracks better.]
Our last night.
[And now she's going to duck into the kitchen. Maybe she should feel bad for hardly ever talking about what's really going on between her and Hikaru to Deirdra. Just maybe.]
She's avoiding me, she thinks to herself. Well duh, Deirdra. Given what she thinks just happened... Ouch.
She yells out to Aria's retreating back. ]
You can't hide from me! I know where you live!
[ They have always been frank with each other, sometimes even pulling out offensive or insulting comments when they're having serious talks. Neither of them mind though. That's just how sisters work. ]
[If it was something small and she simply needed a pick-me-up and good company, she would have indulged Deirdra. They're sisters, after all.
As things stand, though, there's no response from the kitchen. Aria needs to focus on all of the careful motions that involve fetching the Scotch from the fridge, cracking it open and pouring herself a glass. Given how fucked up she feels right now, she might just break something. Or someone. She's not sure yet.]
[ A minute passes after Deirdra passed that remark. Usually, Aria would just come up with an equally witty comeback, or slap Deirdra on the arm if she can't think of one. But silence? She thinks to check up on Aria, following her to the kitchen.
She leans on the frame of the kitchen entrance, watching Aria and letting her finish. It seems like she really needs that drink, and Deirdra will let her simmer down a bit.
Once Aria has taken a few sips of Scotch, Deirdra asks her: ]
Dumb question cause you're obviously not, but are you okay?
[ Deirdra pours herself a drink, but doesn't touch the Scotch. Aria needs all the Scotch she can get.
She turns to Aria, after she went through one side of the rainbow to the other. ]
Okay, listen. We have about two to three hours before everybody else wakes up and I don't want them to overhear anything while you're not ready. Just saying though cause I'm awake and I'm here.
[She falls quiet for a while, because it's suddenly really interesting, looking into her glass.]
I ended it with him. Told him that I needed time.
[Not that they were ever really together, but... things had started to feel so certain after he had called off his engagement with the Princess. That level of certainty scared her.]
[ She takes a long, thoughtful sip, mulling over what Aria just said Based on Aria's varying moods in the past, things between them must have been turbulent. Hearing Aria actually talk about it is a totally different ball park. Guess that's what I get for being so direct, she thinks to herself. ]
Don't mean to bug you on this but... Why? I mean, what for? What happened?
[Because it isn't right, it isn't fair, neither of them are ready or maybe she's just not ready and that isn't fair to him, maybe she's scared, maybe she isn't --]
I just don't think now's the time. A lot of things have happened.
[(She doesn't want to love him - not now. She doesn't want to have to need him.)]
[ If I had a new knife for every time someone said that it's just not the right time between them and another party, I'd be an incredibly happy woman right now., she thinks to herself.
Nevertheless, she nods at what Aria said. ]
I trust that you've thought about this before doing what you just did.
[ She leans in closer to Aria. ]
It's just... As your sister, whatever happens, I just want you to be okay. So tell me, do you think this is a it'll-blow-over kind of thing or is it gonna sting for a while and you'll pretend to be okay like you always do?
[ The sadness in Aria's laugh signals the stop of dicking-around type of honesty hour. ]
I'll be here when you figure out, but for now... [ She pinches her thumb and pointing finger together and traces an invisible zipper over her mouth, then smiles at Aria. ]
In that case, I won't beat the crap out of them, but I'll make sure they don't have a door to their bathroom for at least a week. Imagine not being able to poop in private for a week... [ She strokes her chin in amusement, hoping to make Aria laugh even more.
[ Deirdra takes her glass to the sink. Wu Mei and Rilea would have a fit if they left things untidy. Besides, she's 70+ years old. She's totally a big girl now. ]
Alright. Good morning, then. Rest well. [ Aria probably needs it more than I do. ]

...Well. Now she feels a bit like a child that's been caught doing something less-than-good.
Right. She's an Inquisitor, and a proud member of the Searing Wind. She doesn't have to explain anything.
Chin up, girl.]
Good morning.

Good morning, sister.
So, [ she sits up ] wild night?

Yes.

No.
[She's fine, damn it. Be fine, self. Pouring another glass.]
I don't know.

I really, really don't know.

I just know that I can't handle this right now.

I'm going to try and get a little rest. You should too.
[They were all being deployed for the engagement. They needed to be at their best.]
